AI Energy Management for Greener Cold Chains

As carbon fees and electricity prices continue to rise, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems represent a major opportunity for industrial energy savings. In food logistics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and high-tech manufacturing, these systems can account for 30% to 60% of a facility’s total electricity consumption.

Many businesses assume that installing high-efficiency equipment is enough to achieve meaningful energy savings. Effective energy management, however, also requires reliable operating data and coordinated decisions covering cold chain stability, electricity costs, carbon emissions, equipment condition, and service life.

In an interview with Business Weekly Taiwan, Green Value General Manager Yu-Feng Hsu discussed a common misconception about the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry.

“Many people associate refrigeration and air conditioning with repairing household refrigerators or air conditioners. In reality, the industry’s future lies in energy-efficient cold chain systems for high-tech cleanrooms, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, and ESG-driven industries.”

Cold Chain Infrastructure for Over 40 Million Vaccine Doses

During the COVID-19 pandemic, one of Taiwan’s most urgent challenges was establishing stable, secure, and traceable low-temperature storage within an extremely limited timeframe.

Green Value completed a vaccine cold storage facility in three months, shortening a project schedule that would normally have required approximately six months. The company subsequently participated in the construction of several vaccine cold chain warehouses.

Over three years, these facilities supported the storage of more than 40 million vaccine doses.
A cold chain failure can result in the loss of an entire vaccine shipment. It can also disrupt delivery schedules, damage corporate credibility, and create serious operational and public health risks.

Only after the testing had been completed, the vaccines had entered storage, and Taiwan’s national flag had been raised at the facility did the project team fully recognize the significance of its work. The team was helping protect a critical supply chain and maintain the continuity of essential services.

Following the pandemic, demand for frozen food, pharmaceutical distribution, biotechnology logistics, and temperature-controlled delivery continued to grow. Large-scale cold chain logistics centers have since become an important form of infrastructure for e-commerce, fresh food, medicine, and biotechnology.

AI Defrosting Cuts Four-Hour Inspections to Two Minutes

Cold chain facilities face a fundamental operating challenge: they must maintain stable temperatures while controlling one of the facility’s largest energy loads.

A common example is scheduled freezer defrosting. In conventional systems, defrost cycles begin at fixed intervals, regardless of the actual amount of frost on the evaporator. Unnecessary defrosting consumes energy, increases compressor load, and can affect temperature stability inside the freezer.

Green Value addressed this problem by introducing AI image recognition for evaporator frost detection. Cameras monitor frost accumulation, while the AI system determines when the frost has reached the threshold for defrosting.

The technology originated from a practical workplace safety problem. Technicians previously had to inspect equipment installed approximately ten meters above the floor in freezer rooms operating below −20°C. Each inspection was time-consuming and exposed personnel to difficult, high-risk conditions.

The development team reduced a four-hour inspection process to approximately two minutes. The same technology was then extended to support demand-based defrost control.

By initiating defrosting only when required, the system can reduce unnecessary energy consumption, limit temperature fluctuations, and improve refrigeration system efficiency.

Recovering Cooling Energy from Defrost Cycles

Green Value also developed an energy recovery system that captures and reuses otherwise-unused cooling energy associated with the AI-controlled defrosting process.

At a 23,000-ping logistics center in Yangmei, the recovered cooling energy can support air conditioning for approximately 400 ping of office space. This has reduced annual office air-conditioning electricity costs by approximately 80%.

Under a conventional cold chain design, monthly electricity costs during the summer peak season would have approached NT$3 million. After implementing high-efficiency refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, AI controls, energy management, and cooling energy recovery:

  • Peak summer electricity costs were maintained below NT$2.5 million per month.
  • Average monthly electricity costs outside the summer season fell below NT$1.8 million.
  • Overall electricity savings reached approximately 20% to 40%.
  • Annual electricity cost savings exceeded NT$10 million.

Actual savings depend on operating schedules, storage temperatures, cooling loads, electricity tariffs, system configuration, and the energy baseline used for comparison.

Energy Visualization for Low-Carbon Transformation

For business owners, energy efficiency must ultimately translate into measurable improvements in electricity costs, equipment life, return on investment, and carbon reporting.

Green Value begins by establishing an energy baseline and collecting continuous operating data from the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. AI analytics are then used to evaluate equipment condition and model the potential benefits of different improvement plans.

Each proposed measure can be assessed according to:

  • Carbon reduction potential
  • Impact on cold chain temperature stability

This approach is especially relevant to logistics, food processing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and high-tech manufacturing, where refrigeration and air-conditioning systems may account for 30% to 60% of total electricity consumption.

Reducing Peak Demand with Smart Load Management

High-efficiency equipment is only one part of an effective industrial energy management strategy. Businesses must also understand how electricity tariffs, peak demand, and operating schedules affect total energy costs.

Green Value helps facilities coordinate refrigeration loads with Taiwan’s time-of-use electricity pricing structure. For example, refrigeration equipment can be scheduled to take advantage of periods with high on-site solar generation. During off-peak nighttime hours, multiple chillers or refrigeration units can operate at optimized partial loads.

This operating strategy can help facilities:

  • Reduce peak electricity demand
  • Lower utility costs
  • Improve refrigeration system efficiency
  • Maintain stable cold storage temperatures
  • Increase operational resilience
  • Make better use of renewable energy

The optimal schedule must be based on actual cooling loads, product temperature requirements, equipment performance, solar generation, and the applicable electricity tariff.

In 2026, the Azure Alliance launched “The Era of Ocean Purification” at Heping Island in Keelung—deploying the unmanned cleanup vessel “Dolphin Robot” to clear floating debris from the sea surface, and building Taiwan’s first shipping-container work station powered entirely by renewable energy, in active response to the international 30×30 ocean conservation target.

GreenValue has long specialized in energy-efficient cold chain technology, working to drive low-carbon transformation across industries. When we learned this project needed to keep a shipping-container work station comfortable and functional in a harsh coastal environment, we saw exactly where our expertise could make a difference.

The Technical Challenge: Air Conditioning for a Coastal Shipping Container

For this project, GreenValue took charge of the entire air conditioning system for the container work station, covering three areas: container insulation, air conditioning installation, and electrical wiring integration.

▍ Container Insulation

Under Taiwan’s summer sun, the interior of a metal shipping container can heat up rapidly, turning it into an oven. GreenValue applied insulated panel materials commonly used in cold chain warehousing to professionally insulate the container’s interior walls, effectively blocking heat conduction through the metal shell. This significantly reduces the load on the air conditioning system, improving energy efficiency and keeping indoor temperatures stable.

▍ Salt-Resistant Air Conditioning Installation

Salt spray in coastal environments is highly corrosive to standard air conditioning equipment, posing an ongoing maintenance challenge for many seaside facilities. GreenValue installed specially treated, salt-resistant air conditioning units, applying anti-corrosion coating to metal components and piping to ensure stable, long-term operation in Heping Island’s sea-breeze environment—substantially extending the equipment’s service life.

▍ Integrated Electrical Wiring

Beyond the equipment itself, GreenValue also handled the complete electrical wiring for the air conditioning system, ensuring seamless, safe, and compliant integration with the container’s solar power and energy storage systems—truly achieving a closed-loop energy cycle where “green power drives the air conditioning.”

Together, these three technical solutions have solved what was once a persistent problem: a container that baked in summer and corroded in winter. Visiting staff, researchers, and members of the public can now learn about ocean conservation in a comfortable environment.

GreenValue’s core expertise—energy-efficient cold chain engineering and electromechanical environmental control systems—has long served high-standard facilities including pharmaceutical logistics, food cold storage, and LEED Gold-certified green buildings. Driven by a commitment to sustainability, they designed a “breathing warehouse”—a facility that leverages natural regulation to drastically reduce energy consumption.

Designing the “Breathing Warehouse”

When COVID-19 erupted in 2020, fear and uncertainty were widespread. While much of the world retreated to remote work, GreenValue CEO Yo-Fong Hsu mobilized his team for a relentless 24/7 operation. Their objective: to complete a 250-ping (approx. 825 m²) vaccine-dedicated freezer warehouse within four months.

Facing this daunting task, Hsu rallied his staff: “If we each give our all to our specific roles, we can build this for the country—ensuring our families and friends get vaccinated sooner.”

For four months, the team adhered to strict protocols, moving only between home and the construction site to prevent infection risks and delays. Their discipline paid off. The facility was completed on schedule. Watching the first shipment of vaccines enter the warehouse, many team members were visibly moved. For Hsu, it was a defining moment: “Cold chain is more than technology and service; it is a matter of national responsibility.”

GreenValue’s ability to answer this call was underpinned by extensive experience in customized design and deep knowledge of GMP, GDP, and PIC/S regulations. This project not only cemented their professional reputation but also elevated the industry’s trust in their capabilities.

Smart Monitoring & Energy Mastery

“In our designs, temperature control is the baseline. The real challenge is energy control,” Yo-Fong Hsu explains.

GreenValue has developed an integrated monitoring platform featuring visual dashboards and cloud backups, sending real-time alerts via LINE and SMS for 24/7 remote management. In public areas, dashboards display solar power and energy storage data, transforming abstract numbers into visible assurance of safety and efficiency.

To help enterprises achieve ESG goals, GreenValue embeds intelligent energy-saving strategies into every stage of design:
AI-Driven Defrosting: Utilizing image recognition to trigger defrost cycles only when necessary, reducing human error and energy waste.

Addressing the high energy consumption pain points common to cold chain warehousing, the Kung Cheng Capital Yangmei Logistics Center—located in Yangmei, Taoyuan, with a floor area exceeding 20,000 ping (approx. 66,000 m²)—serves as a prime example. By implementing smart energy-efficiency technologies, GreenValue helped its client achieve remarkable energy optimization.

According to the 2024 Non-Production Sector Energy Audit Annual Report published by Taiwan’s Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs, the average Energy Use Intensity (EUI) for warehouse-type buildings is approximately 232.4 kWh/m²/year. Through GreenValue’s planning and design, the actual EUI achieved at this facility was approximately 107 kWh/m²/year—successfully bringing energy consumption down to less than half of the industry benchmark, an impressive achievement in energy conservation.

In addition to deploying high-efficiency energy-saving equipment, GreenValue applied the following innovative technologies:

As e-commerce continues to grow and food logistics volumes rise, energy efficiency in cold chain warehousing has become a decisive factor in whether operations can remain sustainable over the long term.

GreenValue Engineering’s cold chain system design for a large frozen food logistics center in Taiwan has been featured in an in-depth report by Climalife Connect Magazine. Three-Stage Cold Energy Utilization

By introducing Neutragel® Neo brine as the heat transfer medium, this project ensures that low-temperature energy released during defrosting is no longer wasted. Instead, it is sequentially reused across three different temperature zones.

Through the integrated design of piping, control strategies, and brine properties, GreenValue created a highly efficient cascading cold-energy utilization system:

  • Evaporator Defrosting (0 °C–2 °C)
    The brine is first used to defrost evaporators in the frozen storage areas.Compared with conventional electric defrosting, brine offers higher heat-transfer efficiency and lower energy consumption, resulting in more stable and predictable defrost cycles.
  • Dock Buffer Area Cooling (approx. 7 °C–12 °C)
    After defrosting, the chilled brine is redirected to a 1,800 m² loading dock buffer zone.In environments with frequent cargo movement, recovered cold energy helps reduce refrigeration load and mitigate temperature spikes during peak operations.
  • Office Air Conditioning (approx. 12 °C)
    Even after the second stage, the brine retains usable cooling capacity. It is further applied to air conditioning for a 1,500 m² office area.Under this system, the offices require little to no conventional VRF air conditioning, delivering clear and measurable energy savings.

Finally, the brine returns to approximately 22 °C before re-entering the system, completing a closed-loop, energy-efficient cycle.

Proven Energy Performance and International Recognition

Through its three-stage cold energy reuse and optimized defrosting design, the logistics center significantly reduced equipment load and overall carbon emissions by improving total thermal efficiency. The project also achieved LEED Silver Certification, earning international recognition as a model energy-efficient cold chain facility.

What GreenValue demonstrated in this project goes beyond technical integration. It reflects a broader engineering mindset focused on sustainable cold chain systems.

     Recovered condensate water is reused in cooling towers and irrigation systems, delivering up to 80% monthly electricity cost savings while achieving both energy and water efficiency.
  • PIR High-Performance Insulated Panels
     Compared to conventional panels, PIR panels provide four times higher insulation efficiency. Even during power outages, the facility can maintain stable temperatures between 3°C and 7°C for up to 12 hours.
  • Three-Tier Time-of-Use Power Optimization
     By integrating solar generation with off-peak energy storage, the system automatically shifts electrical loads between peak and off-peak periods to maximize overall energy efficiency.
  • Energy Monitoring and Cloud-Based Management
    The site is equipped with 45 temperature and humidity sensors, integrated with SCADA systems, mobile app alerts, and trend analytics to enable real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Dorm Makeover Challenge: GreenValue’s Investment in Comfortable Employee Housing

To help our colleagues enjoy a comfortable living environment beyond work, GreenValue provides modern elevator apartments—each less than 10 years old—for teammates relocating from other cities. These dormitories are designed to be safe, convenient, and welcoming homes away from home.

This year, we hosted our very first “Dorm Makeover King” competition, inviting residents from the 青心路宿舍, 藏疆宿舍, and 大清哈佛宿舍 to share their ideal living styles in a fun and creative way. Throughout the event, every participant showcased thoughtful attention to the details of daily life—from personal rooms to shared spaces.

Some transformed their rooms into dreamlike spaces through creative lighting; others used 3D printing to make custom storage tools for better organization. Many teams worked together to refresh common areas, using wall decals and décor to add warmth and character.
